Our History

Solving Real-World Problems

The first product created by Pixilib is GaelO: a web platform to collect, qualify and review medical images for clinical trials. We started the project to fulfill academic needs in medical imaging research.

Before the GaelO project, we used to see a huge gap between industrial and academic research:

  • In industrial trials, we saw substantial support from CROs delivering high-quality platforms and tools for smooth trial management.
  • In academic trials, we had to struggle with custom data exchange procedures, most of the time involving poorly anonymized datasets collected on USB drives and CDs.

GaelO closed the gap between both worlds. We built a new platform using modern web technologies and made it affordable even for academic clinical trials. With our historical partner, the LYSARC, we completely phased out CD exchanges and significantly accelerated research for this French lymphoma research group.

After GaelO, we continued solving other real-world problems:

  • GaelO-Flow: a research PACS for hospitals to leverage real-world imaging data in research, accelerating clinical studies once again.
  • PixiLearn: an educational platform to train radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians on real clinical cases and help them acquire new practical skills in medical imaging.

A Vision for Research

At Pixilib, we build software tools as well as processes and knowledge. We work with researchers to help them reach their goals: we want them to focus on their medical vision while we deliver robust solutions to validate their hypotheses.

We started by solving data collection issues; now that this problem is solved, we are transitioning to advanced medical image processing to co-create new biomarkers and innovative uses of imaging alongside researchers.

Metabolic tumor volume is our core field of expertise. We believe in this biomarker because it measures total tumor burden and demonstrates remarkable prognostic value in lymphoma as well as several other solid tumors. At Pixilib, we developed tools to make Metabolic Tumor Volume accessible to any clinical trial, including prospective, decision-making trials looking to leverage this marker.

We did not stop at developing software: we partnered directly with researchers on novel clinical applications of metabolic tumor volume and co-authored several peer-reviewed papers in the field. Metabolic tumor volume was only the first step. Today, we stand ready to take on other scientific challenges, develop cutting-edge imaging biomarkers, and help define new imaging-guided therapeutic strategies to improve patient care.

A Vision for Medical Imaging Education

We are building a new teaching workflow for medical imaging education.

We looked closely at how residents are trained: they learn on the ground in hospital departments, acquiring their specialty through real clinical practice, participating as active members of the medical team, and receiving direct mentorship from senior physicians. This model works remarkably well: since Röntgen's discovery of X-rays in 1895, medical imaging knowledge has grown dramatically across more than four generations of physicians worldwide.

Unfortunately, once initial training ends, this continuous mentoring dynamic disappears. Physicians practice in hospitals, build individual experience, but no longer benefit from structured, hands-on training backed by external expertise. Continuous medical education remains largely passive and static, failing to convey the practical skills required to truly transform routine practice.

To address this, we designed our platform based on educational science, adopting a "Learning by doing" methodology powered by dedicated software that integrates full clinical cases directly into the learning experience. We then collaborated with medical imaging experts to rethink their teaching workflows, combining core scientific theory with autonomous interpretation of real clinical cases. Just like in research, software is not our end goal: our objective is to make medical training truly impactful and upgrade clinical practices across generations and borders.

Collaboration with Academics

Academic collaboration is in our DNA. We were founded through academic initiatives, and we remain dedicated to that path. We see academic research as an unparalleled driver of medical innovation: genuine breakthroughs almost always originate from a researcher with a clinical vision rooted in day-to-day practice.

Our ambition is to turn those clinical ideas into reality. We want to be the partner researchers turn to when they have an idea, providing the software, support, and focus needed to develop and validate novel imaging applications. In medical education, our goal is to eliminate barriers to knowledge: connecting physicians worldwide so an expert from anywhere can mentor colleagues and students across the globe.

Expanding to Industry

While most competitors focus almost exclusively on industry-sponsored trials, we chose the harder route by starting with academic clinical trials. Academic research comes with unique demands: highly ambitious concepts, strict requirements for flexibility, high scientific expectations, and limited budgets. By addressing these challenges head-on and solving researchers' needs one by one, we have built the expertise needed to serve as an agile, cutting-edge imaging partner for the pharmaceutical industry.
